Tariffs, Clothing Prices & Availability - What to Do?

How Will the Trump Tariffs Affect Clothing Prices and Availability — And What Can You Do?

I never thought I’d be writing a post like this.
I'm a Personal Stylist, not an economist. But the current political climate is forcing all of us — individuals and businesses alike — to consider things we never had to before. Not just here in the U.S. but around the world.

Recently, I had a long conversation with a friend who owns a fantastic men’s clothing store. We discussed how much he will have to raise his prices. Given his "reasonable luxury" price point, his customers probably won’t flinch — but the impact is real.

Bottom line:
✔️ Prices will go up.
✔️ No one knows exactly how high.
✔️ There’s no way around it.

But the bigger concern isn’t just price. It’s availability.
What will we actually be able to get — and what will be stuck on a container ship somewhere indefinitely?

Think back to shopping during the pandemic:

  • Shelves wiped clean of essentials. Even cat food!

  • Nordstrom replacing half its women’s clothing department with Tonal fitness machines and racks of athleisure wear.

  • Banana Republic filling its stores with comfy furniture and huge plants to hide how little merchandise was actually there.

  • And remember those awful prairie dresses everywhere because there was nothing else to buy?

I remember it vividly. I shop for a living. And it was... not good.

So, What’s Happening Now?

Curious (and concerned), I went digging for answers.
I dove into ChatGPT’s deep research mode. It took a little longer than usual, but what I got back was worth it — a detailed, heavily sourced picture of what’s coming.

Here’s the short version:

Trump’s upcoming tariffs are set to upend the fashion landscape in both the U.S. and Europe.

In the short term, American shoppers will face noticeable price increases — from fast-fashion basics to high-end designer pieces.

Expect fewer choices and sporadic stock shortages as brands and retailers scramble to adjust.

Even in the long term, the situation remains fluid. Many companies are stuck in a “waiting game” — hoping negotiations will roll back some of the tariffs before the trade war triggers deeper economic damage.

In short:
Prices are going up.
Selection will shrink.
The fashion industry is being forced to adapt — fast.

Additional Insights You Should Know

One interesting twist:
The secondhand market — consignment stores, thrift shops, resale apps — is expected to benefit from the tariffs.
More people may turn to secondhand options to find better prices.

Now, full disclosure:
I know plenty of people who love thrifting. I’m not one of them. I find it too hit-or-miss and honestly, I don’t have the time.
But — it’s still a smart option for those who enjoy the hunt.

Regardless of where you shop, one thing is clear:

Shopping randomly won’t work in this environment.

You’ll need a plan.

Why?

  • Because clothes will cost more.

  • Because you can’t assume you’ll always find what you want when you want it.

My Personal Strategy (And One I Recommend)

Lately, I've been wondering how consumer behavior might shift.
Will people finally embrace a mindset I’ve always loved?

Have Less. Love More.

I hope so. And honestly, it feels like the perfect time.

Rather than panic buying or settling for things you don't really love, it’s time to get strategic

Focus on versatile pieces you can wear in multiple ways. This requires you to think about what you'll wear something with BEFORE you buy it.
Think about how many ways a piece can be worn, not just the one way they show it on the mannequin or the model.
Build a strong, versatile wardrobe that can carry you through life's uncertainties. Think power pieces, not t-shirts and jeans...
Buy some fantastic accessories. Accessories that make you say WOW. You can have fewer clothes and more accessories and stretch your wardrobe choices exponentially.
Choose pieces that inspire you — not pieces that feel like you're just "getting by." Don't buy things when you're distracted. Focus, this deserves your attention.

This isn't about creating a drab "pandemic wardrobe" all over again.
It's about building a wardrobe that helps you show up strong — no matter what the world throws at you.

Clothing as Modern Armor

Clothing is powerful.
When done right, it’s like armor — protecting you from the slings and arrows of daily life.

Think about a soldier in dress uniform:
It’s impressive for a reason. It’s designed to inspire strength, pride, and purpose.

You can do the same every time you get dressed.

In uncertain times, your wardrobe becomes more than fashion.
It becomes a source of confidence, resilience, and identity.

Let’s build it wisely.
