If you're only wearing 20% of your closet, it's not your fault
The fashion industry is a $1.5 trillion dollar machine.
And here's something they don't want you to know...
They absolutely do NOT have your best interests at heart.
I mean, think about it. Do you really believe they put out new fashions year after year, season after season, because they care about making you look amazing?
Hell no.
They exist to make a profit. Period. And they'll present every single thing as though it's the most desirable piece you've ever seen - whether it looks good on you or not.
Here's the brutal truth: They make a ton of complete crap AND they produce incredible pieces that can literally take your breath away.
Just like any other industry. Car companies make gorgeous cars and ugly cars. Jewelry makers produce diamonds and cheap shit that turns your fingers green.
So What's A Smart Person To Do?
Stop being outer-directed and start being inner-directed when it comes to your clothing choices.
You've got to know what you can and cannot wear. You owe it to yourself to find out.
Here's How You Figure It Out
Get yourself a full-length mirror in good lighting. If you don't have one, get one NOW.
Put on one piece - let's say a blouse. Just look at the blouse, nothing else you're wearing with it.
Ask yourself:
- Does it fit well?
- Is it a good color for me?
- Do I smile when I see myself?
- Does it feel good on my skin?
- Am I happy with the print/style?
If you can answer yes to these questions, you probably look great in it. It feels like YOU, not someone else.
But maybe it's too blousy and adding weight to your midsection. Maybe the color is washing you out. Maybe it's too long if you're petite.
Those are signals that this piece is NOT for you.
It doesn't matter if it's the latest trend. It doesn't matter if every influencer is wearing it or celebrities are rocking it all over Instagram.
A no is a no. Period.
Be okay with no because you've learned something valuable, and now you're free to find something better for YOU.
Here's Why Your Closet Is Full of Unworn Clothes
You keep trying to turn a "no" into a "yes."
You buy things that don't really work for you, then wonder why you never reach for them. Or you wear them a few times and feel "off" every single time.
This is exactly how you end up with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
Do Yourself This Favor
Don't buy or keep anything unless you really love it and it feels right for YOU.
Set your own standard and stick to it. You're not dressing to anyone else's standard because you're not just anyone - you're YOU.
Teenagers dress alike because they don't know how to differentiate themselves from the crowd yet.
You're not a teenager. So stop dressing like the crowd.
Once you know how you want to show up, you'll never go back to mindlessly following trends again.
Because you'll know for yourself what you can and cannot wear.
This is just the beginning - setting your own standard. There's much more to creating great personal style, but this is one of the foundations.
Stylishly Yours,
Anne
