Confidence or Style, Which comes first?
After working with over 1,000 people in my personal styling career, I get asked this question all the time...
"Anne, what comes first - confidence or style?"
And honestly? When I first started 19 years ago,I used to think I knew the answer.
I thought if you just looked good, you'd automatically feel good. Put on a great outfit, and boom - instant confidence, right?
Wrong.
Here's what I've actually discovered after years of watching real transformations happen...
Neither confidence nor style comes first.
What comes first is something most people completely skip over: CLARITY and STRATEGY.
You have to know who the heck you want to be before you can figure out how to dress that person.
Here's How It Really Works
My most successful clients - the ones who have those jaw-dropping transformations that make everyone ask "What did you DO?" - they all start in the same place.
They get crystal clear about who they want to project to the world. Not who they think they should be. Not who their mother wants them to be. Not who they were five years ago.
Who they want to BE. Right now. Today.
Once they have that clarity, the strategy becomes obvious. Their wardrobe decisions start making sense. Their shopping gets focused instead of random. Their daily outfit choices become effortless instead of agonizing.
And THEN - only then - do both style and confidence show up together.
It's like magic, but it's not magic at all. It's just the natural result of having a clear vision and a solid plan.
The Transformation Is Real
I've witnessed this process over and over again, and nothing - and I mean NOTHING - brings me more joy than watching my clients walk out into the world as the absolute best version of themselves.
Their energy completely changes. They carry themselves differently. They speak up in meetings. They take risks they never would have taken before.
And here's the beautiful part: That new energy is contagious. They start impacting the world in ways that only they can. They become the person they were always meant to be.
It really is pure magic.
But it all starts with getting clear about who you want to show up as. Everything else flows from there.
So before you worry about confidence or style, ask yourself this: Who do you want to be? How do you want people to experience you?
Get that figured out first. The rest will follow.
